Your neck and back are both made up of small bones called vertebrae. These are stacked on the top of each other to form your spinal column. Your spinal column supports the head and protects your spinal cord. This structure links the nerves network throughout your body. All the messages travel along with this network.
The top seven bones of your spinal column form your neck which is called cervical vertebrae. All the bones are linked together by facet joints. These small joints are located between your vertebrae together with your neck muscles which help to move your head in any direction.
Neck pain is very common these days. Everyone will have it at some points in their lives. The main cause of neck pain is the result of holding your neck in the same position for too long. Other things which can contribute to neck pain are as follows:

Many people could develop a stiff and painful neck for no reason. Your neck injury can happen after sitting in a draught or after a small twisting injury, for example, while picking weights. This is termed as non-specific neck pain.
You can easily manage short spells of neck pain using pain killers and gentle stretches. However, if your neck pain persists or affects your day to day activities then it is advised to talk to your physician.
The common symptoms of neck pain are as follows:
1.) You may feel pain on either side of your neck or in middle, but it may extend to your shoulders and even chest also.
2.) Your muscles may feel tight especially if you are sitting or sleeping in the same position for a long time.
3.) Your pain can travel to your head which can cause tension headaches. Sometimes pain can travel to your ear and behind your eye also.
4.) You may feel numbness and tingling sensation that can be felt down your arm and fingers.
5.) You may feel clicking noise as you move your head.
6.) If you feel dizzy and continuous blackouts occur, then it can be a symptom of serious neck pain.
If your neck pain lasts more than a few days, you should consult with your doctor. You should speak to them about the symptoms you are feeling like pain and stiffness, tingling, numbness or weakness in your arms and legs.
Most of the neck problems are diagnosed and treated based on the symptoms you are facing. Your doctor can ask you to have an X-ray, a blood test or MRI to know more about the other important causes of neck pain. Most of the time neck pain is easily treated with non-surgical treatments only.
